And "Triangle" is too generic it tells you nothing about how the player might interact with the idea of "three sides", and you can't shorthand the game to just "Triangle". "Tactics" would absolutely fit better than "Strategy", even if they're trying to consciously avoid associating this by name with existing franchises. Octopath Traveler works because it's extremely self-explanatory, and because the made-up "Octopath" sounds memorably ridiculous. Also, not a fan of some of the line readings.įinally, the title isn't great. Will need to play more to get a better sense of it, though. It doesn't feel like the English scriptwriters were willing to fully commit to the bit, like H'aanit's Middle English in Octopath, but it's also too present to just be a dash of dialectical flavor. However, the Early Modern English pastiche in the dialogue is something I could do without. Plenty of room for development later in the story, though. Lots of fun positioning-based tactics as well, making good use of the in-game space.Īt a glance, the plot seems fairly grounded, which I like a lot, and fairly generic, which I'm less fond of. I could see the skill lists and expanding roster getting hard to manage later in the game, but everything in the first demo battle was easy to follow despite starting in the middle of things with no prior knowledge, which bodes well. I've never been all that fond of classical MP gauges, so the BP system from Octopath was nice to see as a replacement. The combat is as sharp as I'd expect from the Octopath team. Lovely character art as well, as expected. The fixed camera and lack of on-field combat in Octopath did seem to allow better framing of cutscenes, as locations were designed to function solely as backdrops, but given the genre, I think this approach makes sense here.

The character are a little more detailed, and the free camera rotation lets you soak in the environment much more. Triangle Strategy is a small step up from Octopath in terms of visuals, I feel. I'm confident that most of my minor quibbles with the game can be ironed out through the demo feedback cycle if they've still got a year left in development, and what's working well is excellent so far. Played the first skirmish of the demo, and it was fantastic.
